The operational risk framework for an organisation plays a critical role in defining the approach of organisation towards managing operational risks. An effective framework needs to consider and incorporate diverse topics such as processes, methodologies, communication, structure, culture, strategy and human factors.
In this session, the expert speakers shared guidance on how to design and implement and implement an effective operational risk framework. Key topics included were: –

- Defining methodologies for risk assessments, control assessments, recording incidents, monitoring risk indicators and addressing any identified issues.
- Considering the human and cultural factors that may influence the quality of the risk management framework’s implementation.
- Defining roles and accountabilities for different aspects of risk management.
- Conducting periodic review of the framework to ensure it continues to be fit for purpose.
The expert speakers for this session were Elena Pykhova and Sean Titley. Elena is Operational Risk executive and Director and founder of her own consultancy company, The OpRisk Company. Elena has over 20 years’ experience in financial services and has been working with many international institutions to deliver practical solutions in Operational Risk management. She is well known in the industry as a respected trainer, Chair of the Operational Risk Committee of the Association of Foreign Banks and Director of the Institute of Operational Risk responsible for the Institute’s Educational portfolio.
Sean is a leading member of the Operational Risk community in London, with over 20 years of experience in Risk Management. He has co-authored several papers and acted as a speaker and panellist at several external events. He is currently working as Director of Business Development for the Institute and Deputy Chair of the Association of Foreign Banks Operational Risk Committee. Sean was previously the Head of Operational Risk, Europe and Asia Pacific for Toronto Dominion Bank, running a team of Operational Risk professionals. Sean also pioneered Conduct and Fraud Risk management frameworks and provided expertise in Enterprise Risk Management, Governance, Strategy, New Business proposals, Reputational Risk and ran a number of major risk-related projects.
Manoj Kulwal is the Chief Risk Officer at RiskSpotlight and Director of Marketing at the IOR. He has 18 years of professional experience covering operational risk management, enterprise risk management, strategic performance management and business intelligence. He been involved in risk management related industry initiatives such as revision of the ISO 31000 risk management standard and development of the Certification of Operational Risk Management (CORM) at IOR. He is actively involved in consulting and training related engagements on operational risk management. He also led development of world’s first forward looking web-based operational risk news service – RiskSpotlight Portal.
